 Just a year later, in 1969, Apollo 11 killed the curiosity by achieving a remarkable feat.

It took 4 days, 6 hours and 45 minutes to cover a long distance of 3,84,400 km and  the astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to step on the moon.

The whole world saw it as a triumph of an undefeatable technology, and the Apollo Guidance computer stole the show for perfectly executing the mission, but today,

we live in an era where the technology of a cell phone is way more compact, cheaper and faster than the technology, which took us to the moon.

 Our will to explore more and more, has always astonished us…

Forty seven years have passed since this historic event ,and today, we cannot imagine our daily life, without science.

We have travelled into the unknown by restlessly exploring and making human lives better.

The comparison for sure sounds weird, like we are comparing a Neanderthal man to Tony Stark draped in an Iron-man suit , but this might help understand the extent of our progress.

Let’s take a look at how far we have reached in the realm of science, taking long autobot-like strides on the road of technology

 

 

“An  iphone-7 Plus works 2400 times faster than that of the computer used in Apollo11”

The processor speed of AGC was 1 MHz, while that of an iphone 7 plus is 2.4GHz

The Apollo Guidance Computer did not have anything that even closely resembled to a software !!

The computer that guide Apollo11 to the moon, built by MIT nerds, did not have any pre-written instructions. Rather, they were hand woven into its “core rope memory” by manually stitching 1s and 0s with  magnetic strands.

It consisted of buttons labelled with NOUN, VERB,ENTER ,CLR (clear), PRO (proceed) ,RESET and KEY REL (key release)  to turn on and off the system. It also contained an altitude indicator that displayed orientation of spacecraft, along with inertial measuring unit.

Almost all the instructions were very simple and the concept of touch screen graphics and multi tasking  only seemed like an over-ambitious  fantasy from a science fiction novel.

      But today , as we all know, merely a touch on your cell phone screen can  open a new , virtual world of enormous possibilities.

 

An iphone7-plus is enabled with a RAM ,that is 750,000 times more than that of an Apollo Guidance Computer.

The AGC worked with only 4 kb RAM, while the iphone7-plus is equipped with 3 Gb RAM.

On the other hand :

On comparing , it turned out that AGC was 170 times heavier than an I-phone7 plus and could only store 32 kb of data and despite the heaviness , the storage capacity was 8 million times less than that of an I phone 7plus , which can store up to  256 Gb.

On, the basis of cost as well…

“An iphone7-plus is 109 times cheaper than that the Apollo Guidance computer”

The AGC was an enormously expensive machine referring to the time it came out of.  It costed $150,000 whereas, iphone-7plus costs $1375 .

 

Apollo 11 was quite remarkable for the era of technology it came out of,

this was an effort to portray the fact that the technology which seemed complicated and expensive earlier has become compact, more efficient and is influencing our life in every manner possible.
